The Memory of Past Births (1899 Second Edition)
By Charles Johnston, M.R.A.S. — Bengal Civil Service (Retired)
Scanned from the Original Second Edition | Goodson Gallery Digital Archive
What if the struggles, skills, and dreams of this life were echoes of lives before? In The Memory of Past Births, Irish theosophist and Sanskrit scholar Charles Johnston explores the soul’s journey across incarnations — blending Eastern philosophy with Western introspection.
Originally published in the late 1800s and reissued in this 1899 Second Edition, this rare spiritual text suggests that through deep awareness and spiritual discipline, one can begin to access memories from former lives. Johnston’s writing invites readers to understand karma, reincarnation, and the eternal Self — long before these ideas entered mainstream conversation.
About the Book
This isn’t merely a philosophical treatise. Johnston, writing with clarity and reverence, draws from:
-
Eastern spiritual texts and Theosophy
-
His personal experience in India as a British civil servant
-
His mastery of Sanskrit and Eastern languages
-
His association with the Theosophical Society (founded by Helena Blavatsky)
Johnston argues that the self does not die with the body, and that spiritual practice can unlock access to the deeper thread of consciousness — that which spans lifetimes. It’s a bold work that invites contemplation and expansion.
